After 70 years, Mary Louise McCann, my mother-in-law was recognized for her service as a member of the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) in WWII on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was awarded posthumously for her exceptional service in the military.

Mary McCann was one of 1,102 WASP whose duties included ferrying aircraft from factories to military bases, training pilots and crews, and towing targets for the war. Thirty-one Texas women were honored.

The unique medal designed by the U.S. Mint will be displayed at the Smithsonian.

Mary Louise was an excellent role model for women. She was an independent and brilliant womanShe was in the WASP and obviously very capable of doing a good job. Once she married, she was whole heartedly a mother and wife, and never looked back.
