On Dec. 6, Bethel Joy Club held a marriage vows renewal ceremony for eight couples with approximately 160 family and friends. A couple of challenges were overcome.

  • The minister's wife was going to be the reader for the ceremony, but six weeks prior to the ceremony, she and the minister announced their departure from the church.
  • The group's pianist was notified of another commitment which provented her from participating.

The group rallied together in support of each other and they were able to fit the pieces of the puzzle together nicely with a friend minister performing the ceremony and a friend pianist.

Bao Vang, producer and anchor of WSAW News Channel 7 Sunrise program, recently wed her fiance of a year. Both Bao Vang and Noah were born in the United States and are a traditional couple. Honoring their families, Noah and Bao Vang chose a traditional Hmong wedding with heritage spanning generations.

In the Hmong wedding tradition, the families must approve of the marriage along with a dowry. If this does happen, and there are no guarantees, then the marriage cannot take place.

Why Marriage is a Strong Institution in the U.S.

According to Reginald Bibby, a University of Lathbridge sociologist, "the traditional family remains not only the most prevalent family situation in Canada, but also the one most people hold up as the ideal family arrangement." In 2009, marriages and births are up in Russia for the first time as mentioned in 3News.com.

A 2002 "Why Marriage Matters" report, sponsored by the Institute to American Values, concludes three fundamentals:

Democratic legislature is under pressure to pass a bill authorizing same-sex marriage before Governor Jon Corzine's term ends in January.

Governor Corzine was unseated in the Nov. 3 election and incoming governor, Chris Christie, opposes gay marriage. Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage states, "They're doing it in a lame duck, because it's as far away from an election as possible."

On Nov. 3, Washington voters approved a "domestic partnership" registry which gives same-sex  marriage the same rights as traditional marriage.

Five states now grant same-sex couples the same rights as traditional marriage:  Iowa, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Washington. In January, New Hampshire will join this group.

Traditional marriage is being examined by states of Maine and Washington. Five states that have legislated, through court rulings, legal gay marriage are:  Connecticut New Hampshire, Iowa, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

Traditional Marriage - Maine

Voters at the ballot box decided to affirm a law allowing same-sex marriage. According to Matthew Dunlap, Maine's secretary of state, voter turnout seemed higher on Tuesday, considering it is an off-year election.

Traditional Marriage - Washington State

Voters of Washington did vote on Nov. 3 on Referendum 71 to approve or reject domestic partnerships, but the outcome is still undecided at this printing. Votes were 51 percent to 49 percent.  It is expected that if the domestic partnership issue passes, then gay marriage is the next step.

Traditional marriage is being examined by states of Maine, Washington, New York, and California. President Barack Obama has also weighed in on the subject.
